More fun

Visiting my younger brother in New York City. He’s tour guide professionally, so he conducted a really cool tour of the city for me!

This is me at the remains of the gate at Pier 54, where the survivors of the sinking of the Titanic were disembarked to meet with anxious relatives. Further history on Pier 54:

The same pier also played a pivotal role in another ill fated ship disaster.  Just three years later, in 1915, the ship Lusitania left from Pier 54 before being torpedoed by a German U-boat off the coast of Ireland on May 7. The Lusitania sank in less than 20 minutes, killing almost all of the 2,000 passengers and crew.

This is Little Island, “a two-acre public open space built on a platform over the Hudson River.”

I was very interested by this bike path. Unlike in Philadelphia, where the bike path is separated from car traffic by nothing more than paint on the street, the NYC bike path is physically separated from car traffic.

Obviously, this sort of path can only be set up on a really broad street, but I think it makes both car drivers and bike riders feel much safer.

Building where the band was set up for the July 4th celebration in Norristown, PA.

Not much mask-wearing visible here, either. Both Philly and NYC have very largely-vaccinated populations.

Good show! They shot off quite a few isolated fireworks after the main show was clearly over. Think that was to space out the crowds leaving.

Woo-hoo! Yep, lots and lots of fireworks!
