Looking through my comics collection once, I decided that I really like the superhero team comics the best. As I had a good family growing up, I don’t need to read about families, but a band of brothers/teammates? I had something like that in the Navy (PN3, USN, 1991-2001), but that idea has always appealed to me, so I read adventures where our heroes/heroines are part of a group. Thor (blond fellow in the picture above) is one of my favorites as he’s both part of the Avengers as an MVP (Most Valuable Player) and part of Asgard, first as a prince and lately as its king.

Live-action movies and TV shows are of course marvelous, but comics can deliver a reasonable facsimile of energetic action. One of the greatest comic book artists was of course Jack Kirby. Marvel Comics was extremely fortunate to have Stan Lee and Kirby produce lots and lots of comics together for the first decade of Marvel’s existence. They set a distinctive style that has stood up well over the years since then. This is from New Gods, a comic Kirby wrote and drew after he left Marvel for DC.

Here’s another scene from New Gods (1972), Darkseid’s body language is only mildly threatening, but Metron feels it best to do as he’s told. The Queen Mother is also a completely open book as far as her feelings go.

John Byrne was an artist of the 80s. His work is slicker and smoother, but clearly owes a great deal to Kirby.

I really appreciate Spider-Man’s expression here. So few details on it, but it’s clear he’s asking Colleen Wing a serious question.
Magneto manages to exude power and menace without even facing anyone.

Here’s Guardian of Alpha Flight throwing his weight into a punch to Wolverine’s jaw.

Here’s Frank Miller, an artist of the 80s, he doesn’t even need words for the last few pictures as Matt Murdoch’s (Daredevil’s) father is forced into signing a contract.

From the 90s, Wonder Woman (She wore a different costume for a bit) demonstrates the effect of having danced with the god Pan.
