The murder of Renee Good sparked immediate outrage across the country. The images of how she died spread far and wide. In an encounter that has proven to be very highly popular on Xitter (I ran across perhaps half a dozen re-presentations in just a few minutes of scrolling), Press Secretary Leavitt is asked about Good’s murder, charges the reporter with being biased (He’s obviously from, y’know, the Reality-Based Community) and changes the subject to people who have suffered from ordinary street crime perpetrated by unauthorized immigrants. Right-wing comments I’ve read seem to be oblivious to the difference between being attacked by an ordinary criminal and by a law enforcement officer.

I also think of all those 2nd Amendment guys who collect guns because “We have to defend ourselves against an oppressive government!” Okay. so
Notably, Trump backed off of his lie that the ICE officer was injured, instead saying the agent was justified in using deadly force because Good was being “disrespectful.”“The woman and her friend were highly disrespectful of law enforcement,” Trump told reporters…
So where are all those brave, fiercely independent 2nd Amendment guys who have stockpiled all those arms? How come none of them are getting all excitable about launching a rebellion?

And speaking of oppressive government, let’s take a look at the governments’ investigation of Minnesota Governor Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Frey. What exactly are they being investigated for? Emptywheel tells us: “Felony saying mean things?” Which, uh, kinda sounds about right. As the government is charging them with “impeding a federal government investigation,” but can’t name any specific actions that they took, that seems to leave just speaking out against the government.

It should have been entirely predictable. As the US got more authoritarian, the idea that foreigners would make the trip to the US to watch the FIFA World Cup match becomes less and less likely. Apparently, the shooting of Renee Good and the Trump Administration’s defense of that murder has prompted tens of thousands of Europeans to cancel their reservations. Personally, I think FIFA should have relocated the event last year.
